COMMENT: Let's start this by making an important statement: Bruto, or any other maker to that matter, can never make a pipe that symbolizes the importance of this auction or the cause which it serves.
To make this pipe, Bruto asked several of Italy's largest briar suppliers to provide each the best piece of briar possible. From among the received pieces, and the other exceptional ones he had in his stock, Bruto made several pipes over a period of 5 weeks. Many of the pieces led to disappointing results, and from among those ones that were successfully turned in pipes, Bruto had selected this one. The main reason why he chose this one is the shape. He worked hard to make it a complex design, without compromising its balance and elegance. To explain this further, I ask you to note the shape of the bowl which is so thick and wide at the rim and yet so slim at the base. The shank, on the other hand, is shaped into 8 very well-executed panels. The panels are carried on to the unique boxwood, which is a part of the mouthpiece, not the shank. Bruto then fitted the pipe with the Don Carlos logo, but made of GOLD.
When I asked Bruto how come he didn't replace the boxwood insert because of the few black sandpits it has (see first photo on the left, 5th row), he replied: "I know I could have replaced it, but after I thought about it, I realized that to me that natural defect symbolizes an unexpected element that disturbs beauty, just like Marco's life that was brought to a sudden end and his children's life that was scarred forever"!
