COMMENT: When Claudio says that the Diamante is all about the best grain that the best briar can yield and any maker can produce, he means it, and this pipe is living proof. You might think that the shape is ordinary, and I can't say I disagree. It is indeed a a quarter bent classic Dublin, with a plateau top. It comes with a full length saddle mouthpiece, and all the pieces fit perfectly to create a classic, traditional, standard shape. The grain, on the other hand, is anything but ordinary. Let me quote the article I wrote recently for the Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine about Claudio Cavicchi: “A pipe becomes a Diamante based 98 percent on grain and 2 percent on the presence of sandpits,” says Cavicchi. “When it comes to grain, I look for the tightness and even distribution of straight grain all over the pipe. Another vital parameter is how well a particular shape manages to bring out the best of the grain.” This pipe is the ultimate illustration of Cavicchi's statement. As you can see, this pipe does indeed offer stunning Straight Grain; the "veins" (lines) of the grain are tight, straight, and consistent. Clearly Claudio chose the Dublin shape because he knew it would bring out the best of the grain, and he was right. The other element crucial in determining whether or not a pipe is good enough to become a Diamante is the presence or absence of sandpits. I have examined this pipe very carefully and closely, and I have not managed to spot even one single, tiny sandpit. You could say that my eye sight has been failing me (that is, if you know me well), but it just can't be that bad. I look and I confirm that the pipe is sandpit-free! This pipe, I'm confident, would be appreciated and cherished by those who really know and appreciate the perfect Straight Grain and know how hard it is to get hold of, let alone in a natural color and at an affordable price. The pipe comes in a huge presentation case, which is used only for at rare and exclusive moments when a Diamante is born. |
