COMMENT:

If you care so much about shape definitions, like I do, then you know how confusing it can sometimes get when the Bulldog and the Rhodesian need to be set apart in clear cut terms. Some people have no problems whatsoever doing so in a casual, confident way without really elaborating on the reasons why. What I'm trying to say is that these two shapes tend to be confused one for the other. The pipe we see here is the true, classic Bulldog. Period. One of the main features of the truly traditional Bulldog is the diamond shank and tapered, diamond mouthpiece. As you can see, this pipe has them both. Also, the inward inclination of the bowl top is exactly how I perceive the classic Bulldog, which, in my opinion, is the one most important determining factors when it comes to setting the Bulldog and the Rhodesian apart. I like the fact that the pipe doesn't come with any inserts of silver bands because I believe that in this case, this added to the simple elegance of this wonderful classic shape. This pipe should be a true treasure for anyone who likes this elegant classic shape: the Bulldog.

COMMENT:

I hope you don't mind if I repeat an introduction I just wrote for another pipe. When I saw this pipe, I starting thinking about Cavicchi and the Apple shape. I went back to pictures of previous pipes that I have acquired and sold over the past 10 years, and I came to the conclusion that the Apple is not only one of the most regularly produced shape, but also that Cavicchi never really sticks to one or even two or even three interpretations of the classic Apple. It's quite impressive to put all those pictures together and see the subtle and yet evident differences among them. This pipe is not exception. It's a very subtle combination of the Billiard and the Apple, and I chose the latter as a shape definition because I believe it is the dominant shape. Here, Claudio opted for nothing decorative, no inserts, no band, no metal, etc. The pipe is what it was originally designed to be made up of: wood and acrylic (or other material), bowl-shank and mouthpiece. I hope this pipe works as a reminder of how elegant and graceful pipes inherently are. Last but not least, I hope you see the absolutely breathtaking grain. Believe me, I have seen pipes sold as the pipes with the perfect Straight Grain though it has maximum half the beauty and consistency of the grain on this Cavicchi.

COMMENT:

Let me tell why I have decided to offer a definition based on the unusual combination of the two terms "Chubby" and "Stack" (or Chimney). The bowl is 55mm tall (2.17 inches), while the shank is a mere 36mm (1.42 inches) in length, which meets the classical criterion of the Stack or Chimney which requires that the bowl height exceeds the shank length. As for the part of "Chubby", it is mainly due to the thick shank that I have this impression of the pipe; indeed, the shank measures 23mm (0.91 of an inch) in diameter. The tapered mouthpiece joins the shank at 21.5mm (0.85 of an inch) and maintains the same width till the button of the mouthpiece. What absolutely needs to commented on here is the very attractive, especially on the right-hand side of the bowl (see last picture, from left). In addiont, the Bird's Eye on the bowl top is simply magnificent and it is replicated on the bowl base.
