COMMENT:

This is one of Cavicchi's latest models, and though the basic idea behind the shape is not new to Cavicchi, with a few touches, he managed to give us a truly fresh and unique shape. Here are a few examples of these touches: (1) The bowl shape, when considered alone, is indeed that of an Egg, (2) The way the pipe is shaped and bent closely resembles the Oom Paul (Hungarian), (3) The shank extends beyond the bowl base, creating an elegant heel, (4) The end of the shank where the mouthpiece goes is wavy, and finally (5) The saddle mouthpiece is an Army Mount.

COMMENT:

I think we both agree that the most accurate definition of the shape is that of a Dublin. However, you might be wondering why I chose to add the word "freeform". Well, this addition has nothing to do with the bowl shape itself, which I believe is a good and accurate representation of the classic Dublin. What forced me to use the word "Freeform" is actually the shank. As you may note, the shank is quite long, measuring about 49mm (1.93 inches); this is most definitely a deviation from the classic Dublin which would normally have a much shorter shank. The grain here is clearly indicative of the very, very high value of the 3C grade. It is hard to believe that this very, very good grain had led Claudio to put the pipe in the entry grade of the smooth natural. The grain is a mixture of Flame Grain around the bowl and on the two sides of the shank, and Bird's Eye on the bowl top and base. In spite of the amount of wood and the relatively large size of the pipe, it feels so well balanced and even light in weight. I'm very confident that it will be a pleasure to clench on this pipe, if this is how you smoke your pipes.

COMMENT:

Unusual as it is, I have used the term "Freeform Bell" before, but I have never used with so much conviction as I'm using it here. First of all, I used the "Bell" and not the "Dublin" to the very evident difference in diameter between the bowl top and base. As for the "Freeform" part, it is all due to the 6-paneled shape of the bowl. In all the years I have known, bought, and sold Cavicchi pipes, I don't recall having ever seen a pipe in this shape, offering this unique combination of features (Bell and panel). I find this combination to be more than elegant, more than unique. And the story doesn't stop there. The shank itself is a work of art, and it is shaped in a way that fully and gracefully complements the overall design of the pipe shape. The shape of the shank is that of a pyramid, and being Egyptian, I can't help but praise as much as possible ;-) To add to this symphony of shape designs, Claudio added a thin black acrylic band to the shank, followed by a gorgeous olivewood insert. It continues. He then make the mouthpiece meet the shank in the old-fashioned Army Mount way, adding a fabulous and elaborate silver band to it. Considering all I have said (and I haven't said everything), I have every right to state that this pipe is one of the best deals you can get within the Cavicchi selection, in particular, and in the pipe market, in general.

COMMENT:

The more I hold this pipe and look at it, the more I'm astounded by the size and the unbelievable value it offers being in grade and this price category! I won't right much, but I will give you a few measurements and fact to put things into perspective and to hopefully justify the previous statement:
  • The bowl is 69mm (2.72 inches) tall.
  • The bowl diameter is 39 (1.54 inches) at the base and 44mm at the rim (1.73 inches).
  • The shank is 58mm (2.28 inches) in length.
  • The overall length of the pipe is about 145mm (5.71 inches).
  • This pipe is in the smooth, natural finish
  • This pipe has excellent grain, which is a combination of Flame Grain and Bird's Eye.
  • The pipe pipe can be described as MAGNUM by some.
  • This pipe was definitely made out of a HUGE piece of briar that definitely cost a fortune.
Now, when I think of all the above and I see the price, I can't help but wonder...
