COMMENT: Let's face it. No matter how many fancy shapes pipe makers come up with, the Billiard will always have its own beauty, elegance, and functionality. Having said that, and especially when it comes to handmade pipes, not all Billiards are born equal. In this case, there are some facts that need to be taken into consideration when trying to define the shape: (1) The bowl diameter is slightly larger than you would expect, in relation to its height, which means that the pipe is influened by the Pot, (2) The shank is less in length than the bowl is in height, which again makes the pipe more of a Freeform Billiard, and (3) the shank is tapered, which is again a deviation from the truly classic Billiard. Let's move to more subjective elements. I love the little black, acrylic band in the shank; I find that it adds a nice touch of contract with the natural color of the wood and it bridges the color gap between the wood and the blackness of the mouthpiece. The grain of the pipe speaks for itself, with some good Flame/Straight Grain, and excellent Bird's Eye on the bowl top and base. From my experience, some pressed tobacco smokers make sure that have such a pipe for those moments when available time and pressed tobaccos are not mutually exclusive. This pipe should come as a true find for those of us who love classic shapes, particularly the Billiard, and of course, pressed tobaccos. |
