COMMENT:

I think we both agree that the best and most accurate way to describe this shape is by using the term "Apple", and here I'm talking only about the bowl shape, with no reference whatsoever to the rest of the pipe, mainly the shank. Everything about the bowl shape, from the overall design to the shape of the bowl rim and base, matches the classic parameters of the classic Apple. The shank, on the other hand, it's very, very short, and here I'm talking about the briarwood shank, without counting the shank insert. Unlike most of the wood inserts that Claudio used, this olivewood one comes in a very elaborate shape, but this is not the surprise here. The surprise is that the shank kindly assume an entity of its own, which starts in contrast with the perfectly round and straightforward shank. To accentuate this contrast even more, and in a way to declare his understanding of it, Claudio created a little gap between the briarwood shank and the olivewood shank insert. This touch is quite unusual for Cavicchi, and I must admit it results in a visual effect that I never thought was possible. Somehow, and to my surprise, this little gap doesn't disrupt in any way, shape, or form the visual flow from the shank to the insert. All this is then followed by an elegant Army Mouth Saddle mouthpiece, fitted with an elegant silver band. The grain is very, very worthy of this highest grade, being both tight and consistent all over the pipes. The Bird's Eye on the bowl top and base is a visual symphony!

COMMENT:

As we are now into the "Serious Grain Zone" of the Cavicchi assortment, I don't think I need to draw you attention to the incredibly gorgeous "Straight Grain" on this pipe. I very, very strongly believe that a 5C Cavicchi pipe offers the best value for money, anywhere, at any time, by any maker, from any country. Serous! The shape here is as intriguing and enticing as the grain. I believe that the basic idea behind the shape is the Dublin, though I don't think that "Freeform Dublin" really cuts it! I just couldn't use the term "Freehand" in fear of being even more vague and inaccurate. What you need to know here is that the bowl is not round, but rather oval. If you look at the pipe from above, with the mouthpiece pointing to you, you notice the difference. From that perspective, the bowl rim measures 48.5mm (1.91 inches), across horizontally, and 54.5mm (2.15 inches), vertically. Of course, when you look at the shape, you could also think of the Bell shape, something that I continue to see there due to the marked difference in the diameter between the bowl rim and base. The bend on the shank and the mouthpiece is what we would describe as "1/8 bent". Before I go, I have to point out that in spite of the incredible amount of wood, with walls as thick as 17mm (0.67 of an inch), the pipe is so well-balanced and feels so light in weight. Last, but not least, the pipe comes with an extra long shank, which measures53mm (2.1 inches).

COMMENT:

I have sold many, many Cavicchi pipes in this rare and exclusive 5C grade. I can safely and objectively say that this pipe is most definitely one of the most impressive, breathtaking, unbelievable pieces I have seen to date. We all know how tough it is to combine an elegant shape, in a large size, and with good grain. Well, think about this one. It has a very fluid and graceful feel to it. It comes not only in a large size (bowl height is 59mm, 2.32", and diameter is 52-57mm, 2.1-2.24"), but with an incredibly long shank (85mm or 3.35 inches); the overall length of the pipe is about 176mm (almost 7 inches). AND. It offers the kind of Straight Grain, tight and consistent, that any respectable pipe publication would love to get hold of this pipe and photograph for its cover.
You think I'm exaggerating?! No, not in the least. I do wonder why on earth this pipe was not graded as a Diamante! There are two very, very tiny sandpits on the base of the shank, and I strongly believe that that cannot be the reason! When I called Claudio to tell him he's gone mad, he agreed! I'm not trying to sell a pipe here, simply because if this pipe doesn't sell itself, there is something wrong with us.
As a friend, I'd simply like to tell you that this pipe presents a lifetime opportunity, and I'm so proud and grateful to be the one offering it to my customers.
