COMMENT:

I have to admit that I'm very disappointed with myself for not having been able to come up with a better, more accurate shape definition. I know the word "squat" should be there somewhere, but I don't know "squat... what"! Why the Rhodesian? Well, you have to admit that the general shape brings to mind the Rhodesian, especially when it comes to the bowl shape, particularly the top. What I did is that I imagined there were two grooves around the bowl top, and viola, I saw the Rhodesian that never officially came to existence. Regardless of the technical and accurate description of the shape, I believe this is one very delicate and appealing design. It looks so familiar, and yet when you think about it, you find that it is anything but familiar. The grain is an excellent blend of Flame Grain around the bowl and exceptional Bird's Eye on the bowl top and base. The shank is slightly tapered, which is an important aspect of the shape design. Max Rimensi then added what I believe to be an antler insert to the shank, and then fitted the mouthpiece the old-fashioned Army Mount way. Of course, you expect to comment on the mouthpiece color, and I can't let you down. As you may know, I personally am not crazy about colored mouthpieces. However, I simply can't imagine this pipe with a mouthpiece of a different color. I just love the elegant touch that the mouthpiece added to the pipe. What is also very attractive is the fact that the antler insert seems to have a bit of green in it, which goes so well with the mouthpiece color.

COMMENT:

I could write a lot about the shape, but I promise to be as brief as possible. The shape of the bowl is that of a Freeform Dublin, or better, a "Bell", but that is only when you look at it from the sides. When you look at the bowl from above, you see that the two sides have been squashed in to create an oval bowl shape. The one characteristic that no two people would disagree on is that the bowl is WAY more in height than the shank is in length, which means that this is the one feature that is at the heart of the Stack/Chimney. For this reason, I decided to play it safe, leave the Dublin-Bell discourse behind me, and run with the idea of the Stack. The other part of my shape definition is completely uncontroversial: the bowl comes with the natural plateau top of the briar, and it is MASSIVE! Let me give you a few extra measurements just to help you grasp the uniqueness of this pipe:
  • The bowl is 74mm (2.91") in height, 47mm (1.85") across from one side to the other, and 67mm (2.64"), across from the other side to the other (hence the oval shape).
  • The shank is 37mm (1.46") long.
  • The overall length of the pipe is about 155mm (6.1").
  • The bit of the mouthpiece is a mere 4.5mm (0.18") in thickness, which means it is as comfortable to clench on as can be.
Now if you think I have said enough to show you how exceptional this pipe is, think again. I still have to tell you that all this and the pipe is not only in a smooth, natural finish, but it comes with excellent Flame Grain all around that humongous bowl. Of course, with a pipe like this, it would be best to hold you in your hand while smoking it. However, thanks to how well balanced it is, and mainly thanks to the very, very well made and comfortable tapered mouthpiece, you can still clench on it without wrecking your teeth!

COMMENT:

It's a pipe like this one that reminds me of the reasons why the Lovat has always been my absolutely favorite shape. In the context of Duca pipes, I have to express my admiration of Massimiliano; his production shows that he endeavors in order not to exclude any collectors. He continues to make stunning freehands and freeforms at the same time he shows his first class workmanship in producing those wonderful classic shapes that have been the backbone of pipe making, smoking, and collecting. The pipes shows pretty consistent grain, with no bald patches and above all, with no flaws. This is one of the reasons why Massimiliano opted for a very light and natural stain, which serves the sole purpose of bring out the grain. He went further by fitting the pipe with a beautiful palm wood insert and an elegant Fishtail mouthpiece.

COMMENT:

I simply can't start this comment without making a confession. I have been in love with this pipe ever since I saw it the first time! It's funny how it is with pipes. If you get hooked on a pipe in the first 10 seconds when you first see it, chances are that you will be still hooked on it at any time in the future, and regardless of how much time has passed. What is even more funny is that no matter how hard you try to find things about the pipe that you don't like, trying hard to get it out of your system, you just keep sinking and sinking into that initial impression. It's like quick sand; if you want to get out alive, stop moving!
In all my years as a pipe smoker, collector, and retailer, I have seen only a handful of pipes that can match this one when it comes to complexity and uniqueness. I'm honestly very perplexed as to why Max Rimensi didn't stamp this pipe with his highest and most prestigious grade: Collection! Anyway, let's talk about the shape for a while. I decided to use the term "Freehand" only to be as fair as possible to the exceptional design here; however, if I really have to come up with a more familiar term to define the shape, I would probably go with Freeform Dublin. If you manage for a second to remove all the complex characteristics of the design, you may see that the plain shape of the bowl is that of a Dublin. Max created two parallel and deep grooves, one running down the bowl from either side; they then find their way onto the shank, dictating what shape it (the shank) should take. If you look at the bowl from above, you see that the groove actually started not from the edges of the bowl rim, but rather from the inner edge of the tobacco chamber; this means that the bowl top function as a mental and visual predictor of what is to happen to the rest of the pipe. The bowl diameter at the top is 52mm (2.1"), whereas it becomes a mere 31mm (1.22") at the base. While the bowl is 53mm (2.1") in height, the shank is only 26mm (1.02") in length, including the shank insert. The shank insert is made of two layers: a ring of a dark wood (probably, palm wood), followed by an olivewood insert that naturally takes and complements the shank shape that was formed by the two grooves of the bowl. As Max wanted the shank to be as slim and thin as possible, and in order to make sure that the design is solid and durable, he fitted the inside of the mortise with a while acrylic tube, in which the tenon fits snugly and comfortably. The big surprise here, and one of the best and most intriguing touches, lies in the shape of the mouthpiece. Apparently, Max likes the effect that the two grooves had on the shank, and so he decided to let them dictate the shape of the vulcanite mouthpiece as well. I hope the numerous pictures I provide here will show exactly what all this gibberish means!
The grain is both well-pronounced and uniform all over the pipe, with mainly Flame Grain around the bowl and breathtaking Bird's Eye on the bowl top and base. I love the dark and vivid stain that Max applied here, since it both brought out the best of the grain and at the same time, managed to stands in great contrast with the shank inserts and the mouthpiece.
What I'm trying to say here is that don't worry if you decide NOT to buy this pipe; you most certainly WON'T break my heart ;-)

COMMENT:

I have to first of all let you know that I cannot write a comment objectively here, and this is for one simple reason: The combination of the Dublin and the Lovat has always been one of my favorite! I have always believed that the Dublin bowl is inherently elegant, and I have thought the same of the Lovat "body" (shank and mouthpiece). In this case, the pipe comes with the Dublin bowl and the Lovat body! What more can one ask for! You may be wondering why the pipe weighs as much as it does, and the reason is quite simple: the amount of wood it has. Indeed, the bowl walls are so thick, and believe me, it'll be so tough, if at all possible, to cause this bowl to heat up! I find the shank to be on the slender side, considering the large bowl; however, this added an extra touch of elegance to the whole design. The pipe's main and strongest feature is the incredibly good grain. As you can see, the Flame Grain is both tight and consistent, mainly on the left-hand side of the bowl. The Bird's Eye on the bowl top is out of this world! I love the stain applies, since this combination of black, brown, and golden has indeed managed to enhance the grain and bring out its best.

COMMENT:

Pipes don't get any more elegant and graceful than this one. While I personally have never been crazy about the Churchwarden shape, I do know that it's always been sought after by a lot of fellow smokers/collectors. When I saw this pipe, I simply could not let it go to another, and I'm so happy and proud to be able to bring it to your doorstep (the virtual one, that is)! First of all, the shape of the bowl presents all the requisites of a truly innovative and well studied and executed freehand, and I do hope that the pictures show what I mean by this. I find the shank in and by itself a true example of top-notch skill and design. The grain is stunning, with some of the most wonderful and compact Bird's Eye and Cross Grain. I also love the stain and how it brings out the best of the grain. I just have to point out that the pipe in reality is less red and more brown than the pictures seem to show. I see this pipe as a potentially faithful companion for relaxing moment in the comfort of your favorite and more private place. Just to help you understand the uniqueness of this pipe, I'd like to give you the length of the mouthpiece, which is about 123mm or 4.84 inches. Finally, and in spite of the extra length of the pipe, it feels so well balanced and light in weight, and I'm confident that whether you choose to hold you in your hand o clench on it, it will be a great pleasure to smoke it.
