COMMENT:

It's quite impressive how effortlessly a cleaner runs through the entire pipe without removing the mouthpiece (like a hot knife through butter)! The one thing that I find most unusual is the shape of the tobacco chamber. When I failed to describe it accurately in words, I took a CLOSE-UP PICTURE , with an illustration of how I see the tobacco chamber. (I'm terrible at freehand drawing, but I trust you'll get the idea.) I tried to measure the thickness of the wall opposite the shank, at its thinnest point in the lower part; it's about 6-7mm, which is still excellent, and the smoke will reach that part shortly before it has been fully consumed. The opposite wall of the bowl, at that point, measures a staggering 17mm in thickness. Though this bowl shape is quite unusual, I have a good feeling about it; I believe it will be conducive to easier and more regular combustion. Time will tell.
The angle created between the bowl and shank is not as tight as in the case of a classic Oom Paul (Hungarian). You decide whether this is good news or bad; what I can tell you is that the smoke will be a whole lot less likely to get in your eyes! Tonino extended the shank by inserting another piece of briar, marked by the slim black acrylic band. I very much like the slimness of the shank, and the gorgeous "neck" created by the bowl and shank meeting. It's a perfect fit if you like to hold your pipe in your hand, with your thumb around the bowl. The bowl is 58mm (2.28 inches) tall, with the tobacco chamber being comparable in size to a Dunhill that goes way beyond Group 6.

COMMENT:

Now, I'm quite partial to Jacono's dark brown stain because I find it really beautiful, so I won't comment on that further and I'll stick to the objective issues: The shape and the grain. The shape of the bowl is indeed that of a traditional Apple; the reason why I added the word "freeform" is because of the rather unusually long shank. As with the typical Jacono Apple, the shank is quite robust and tapered, starting at a 22mm diameter at the bowl-shank joint and going down to an 18mm diameter at the meeting point between the shank and the mouthpiece. I also find the choice of a short saddle mouthpiece quite interesting and unique, since it brings to mind (very, very vaguely) the main idea behind the Lovat. The grain is very good and thanks to the stain, Tonino managed to bring it all out. The entire base of the bowl and the shank is nothing but gorgeous Bird's Eye.

Amazing the numerous variations on the Apple that Tonino regularly and consistently manages to produce; in addition, you never find two that are identical. This shape, for example, is what I view as a typical Jacono Apple interpretation, and yet, there's a twist to it. If you check out the bowl rim, you'll notice that it is not flat as is usually the case. The nice thing is that the grain is not at all interrupted on that edge of the bowl. It follows through from the bowl side onto the bowl top, with no visual disruption. The only visual aspect of the grain on this pipe, the one that caused Tonino not to grade it higher, is probably the dark cluster of very fine grain that is located on the top side of the shank (see last picture, second row, from left). To make up for this, the pipe exhibits excellent grain, with some stunning Bird's Eye on the bowl and shank base. Though the pipe is quite robust, with so much wood all over, and thanks to the very well made bent saddle mouthpiece, I believe the pipe will feel quite balanced and comfortable when clenched on. If you prefer to hold your pipes in your hand while smoking, then you're in for a treat!

COMMENT:

This is as classic an Apple as Tonino ever produces. You may note that he deviated from his own classic interpretation of the Apple shape very little here. The pipe is a typical Jacono also in regards to the extra large size. To make up for the size and weight, Tonino opted for a bent saddle mouthpiece that is both thin (4.5mm) and slightly wide (18mm); this is due to offer a lot of stability and lead to a lot of comfort if you decide to clench on the pipe. As for the grain, it is simply gorgeous. Around the bowl it is mainly Flame Grain, and on the bowl base, and the shank base and top, there is nothing but fabulous Bird's Eye. The choice of the stain is excellent here since thanks to it, Tonino managed to bring out the best of the grain, and at the same time complement the overall visual appeal of the shape.

COMMENT:

This is the second pipe in this assortment that I decide to define as a Zulu or Woodstock, of course a freeform (no room in the shape definition space to add the word "freeform"). This one is less of a classic Zulu than the other previously commented on, and this is mainly due to the less canted forward bowl. Because of the way Tonino designed and executed the shape design, the pipe appears to be one piece, and one piece only. Notice how the bowl flows into the shank which in turn flows into the mouthpiece. Indeed the shank and mouthpiece together seem to be tapered as if they were one piece. The pipe is not what you would call feather weight, and that is because it is quite large in size and it also has so much wood, particularly the bowl. The grain, on the other hand, is probably the best on this page; it's a delightful blend of Flame Grain and Bird's Eye. Judging by how well made the tapered mouthpiece is, I'm confident that you will realize this pipe weighs as much as it does only when you weigh it! In other words, I trust you will find the pipe very comfortable to clench on.
