COMMENT:

The beauty of this pipe lies in its simplicity and conservative look. Having said that, I have to point out the great job Tonino did with the angle (the neck) between the bowl and the shank; this is one of the most difficult aspects of pipe design and shape execution. No matter how good the grain or the shape that the maker has in mind is, the one single point will either make it or break it, and by "break it", I mean the pipe will look asymmetrical and out of balance. The bowl is indeed that of a classic Dublin, with a saddle mouthpiece. The greatest source of beauty here is the grain, which is a very well pronounced Flame Grain all around, with a small patch of Bird's Eye on the bowl base. Bird's Eye is most evident on the briarwood shank extension, which also show some Straight Grain. Though the tobacco chamber is comparable to a Dunhill Group 5, the pipe overall is of feather weight. This would make a great addition to any collection, and I believe it'll prove to be a wonderfully smoking pipe.

COMMENT:

This is, with absolutely no trace of doubt in my mind, one of the best Jacono pipes I have seen to date, and in terms of shape and grain and grade, this is perhaps the star of this Jacono selection. I know that there is very little one can add to this major statement, but you know me, I can always add something ;-)
First of all, the pipe is HUGE, and it is so difficult to produce a pipe of such size without compromising the elegance and gracefulness of the design. Well, this pipe is the ultimate proof that Tonino possesses both the vision and the skill to produce such a rare piece. The shape is what you see in the pictures, but I have to draw your attention to the panels. Believe it or not, the bowl has only two facets, both with rounded edges, and each flowing visually effortlessly into the other. The grain is simply spectacular, with Cross Grain on the larger part of the bowl, and some absolutely mind-boggling Bird's Eye on the other. Notice also the elegant boxwood insert, which is part of the mouthpiece, and where the Jacono logo is inserted in black to create contrast with the light-colored wood.

COMMENT:

To tell you the truth, I have never used the word "Author" to describe a pipe shape (I have used it in numerous non-pipe contexts); the reason behind this is that I have never really understood what the name entails. Everything I see a pipe described as an Author, I see nothing more or different than a Chubby Apple. I have decided to use the name "Author" only in an attempt to show that I'm sophisticated...
The pipe is another excellent Apple shape that should be associated directly and immediately with Tonino's work. The pipe is large and has so much wood all over. The shank is quite chubby, with a diameter of no less than 20-21mm. You realize that in spite of the weight and the size, the pipe is quite graceful and very well balanced when you hold it by the bit and shake it. The grain is good as it gets within the Queen grade, with beautiful and consistent Flame/Straight Grain all around the bowl and some stunning Bird's Eye on the base of the bowl and shank. I love the short-ish tapered mouthpiece and how it complements the overall shape design, offering both balance and potential comfort if you decide to clench on the pipe.

COMMENT:

This is one of my favorite pipes in this Jacono selection, and here I'm speaking as a pipe smoker/collector. The reason for this is that I like both small and straight pipes, of classic shapes. Having said that, and though the pipe is probably the smallest Jacono in this new assortment, the tobacco chamber is still comparable to a Dunhill Group 5-6, which seems to be as small as Jacono pipes can get. The grain can be described only with superlative adjectives, but to be professional and objective, I'll just say it is MAGNIFICENT! I asked Tonino (and I wish I didn't ask) why a Queen has a rusticated bowl top. He turned red in the face and said: "Don't you see the grain? This was supposed to be a good KING grade!". Thank God, I managed to distract him at that point! Whether you like to clench your pipes or hold them in your hand, this pipe will most definitely be a true champion. Finally, I looked and looked and looked, and I couldn't spot ONE SINGLE sandpit anywhere on the pipe. Talk about quality!

COMMENT:

I have to start my comment here talking about the fabulous Straight Grain on the left-hand side of the bowl (see second picture, first row, from left). While the other side is good in its own right, it doesn't come close to the quality of the Straight Grain on that other side. Luckily for you, if you decide to buy the pipe, you will get BOTH sides ;-)
The shape is another Jacono Apple, but with an evident deviation from the classic shape. The bowl is tapered big time, starting at the bowl base with a diameter of 47mm and ends at the rim with a diameter of only 30mm. It doesn't stop there, the bowl is slightly oval in shape and you start noticing this when you look at the pipe from above. The bowl walls are so thick reaching a staggering 15mm at the bowl base. In spite of the size, the pipe seems so much lighter in weight than it actually is, and it also has so much balance to it. The well made, thin saddle mouthpiece will contribute greatly in making the pipe feel as comfortable on the teeth as you would like it to be. This is truly a Jacono signature shape, and with such fabulous grain, you have uniqueness offered on a silver platter.
